Gerrard hopes Emre Can extends Liverpool contract

Bengaluru, February 1: Liverpool legend and former skipper Steven Gerrard admitted that he is concerned Emre Can is pushing for a transfer away from Anfield.

The Germany international is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to sign an extension to his existing deal.

Can has been consistently linked with a switch to Juventus last summer and the Italian giants are likely to renew their interest when the campaign ends.

Liverpool have held extensive talks with Can's entourage but the two parties are yet to settle on an agreement. And while Gerrard hopes Can does commit his future to his former club, he feels it is just a matter of time until the midfielder departs.

"I think Liverpool have made him a better player and in Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff I think they are perfect for him," Gerrard said on BT Sport.

"I can't make decisions for Emre Can but for me, in his shoes, I would be a bit more patient with Liverpool and I would hang on. I think Liverpool - the club and the fans - have a lot of belief in him.

"I think you can see that he's been asked the question many times and if he had decided he was going to stay at Liverpool, I think everyone would know that by now.

"You still have that little bit of hope as a Liverpool fan that he might change his mind but for me, for it to go to the back end of January it's a concern."

Can scored a stunner against Huddersfield in Liverpool's 3-0 win on Tuesday but he has not done well this season on a consistent basis and that has been a worry for the fans but no one would like to see him depart for free.

When Jurgen Klopp was asked about Can's situation after their win he once again left the decision firmly in the German's hands.

"As long as people behave like Emre (Can) now - behaves and delivers - then everything is fine and normal in life," Klopp said.

"I said it a few times, sometimes you want to sell a player, sometimes you want to keep a player and that's how it is. We can always make a big story in the world about it.

"If we have to do it then we shake hands and say goodbye. And if he stays we don't shake hands but say hello again. We will see."
