Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner expressed his satisfaction after his team secured a 2-1 victory over Southampton, reinforcing their status as pre-match favourites. The match began with Southampton taking the lead in the 14th minute when Tyler Dibling scored past Dean Henderson, following impressive play by Kyle Walker-Peters. However, Trevoh Chalobah's controversial header equalised for Palace, despite Southampton's claims that Aaron Ramsdale was obstructed.
Eberechi Eze scored seven minutes into the second half to clinch the win for Crystal Palace. This victory marked their fourth of the season and moved them up to 15th place in the Premier League standings. After a challenging period following three consecutive losses to Everton, Liverpool, and Nottingham Forest, Palace have now lost only two of their last 11 matches, winning four and drawing five.

Glasner was pleased to conclude 2024 positively at Selhurst Park. "I'm very pleased," he told Premier League Productions. He acknowledged that playing against teams at the bottom can be tough. Regarding Chalobah's goal, Glasner suggested that if it had been disallowed, many other goals this season would also have been ruled out. He emphasised that everyone uses the rules to their advantage.
Southampton's struggles continued as they ended the year at the bottom of the Premier League table with just six points from 19 games. Only Sunderland in 2005-06 and Sheffield United in 2020-21 had similarly low points at this stage of a Premier League season. Additionally, Southampton has now gone 17 away games without a win in top-flight football for only the second time in their history.
Ivan Juric, who replaced Russell Martin as manager but is yet to secure a win, commended his players for their resilience during this transitional phase at St. Mary's. "Against West Ham we did really good," Juric stated. He noted areas for improvement but praised his team's competitive spirit and determination to improve details.
Juric disagreed with Glasner regarding Chalobah's goal, telling BBC Sport that he believed it was a foul on Ramsdale. "This goal changes the situation," he said, highlighting it as another set-piece goal conceded by Southampton. Juric found it difficult for Ramsdale to act when pushed by an opposing player.
Despite differing opinions on key moments in the match, both managers recognised their teams' efforts and areas needing improvement as they look forward to future fixtures in the league campaign.
