Glasner Focuses On Team Improvement After Officiating Error In Palace Defeat

Crystal Palace's manager Oliver Glasner chooses not to dwell on a refereeing mistake that cost them a goal against Brentford, focusing instead on areas of improvement for the team. Despite the setback, Glasner praises the referee's character and looks forward.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is not fixating on the refereeing mistake that denied Eberechi Eze a goal in their 2-1 Premier League loss to Brentford. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa scored for Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, while Palace equalised briefly through an Ethan Pinnock own goal.

The Eagles believed they had taken the lead in the 26th minute when Eze's free-kick hit the post and went past Mark Flekken. However, referee Samuel Barrott blew his whistle for a foul by Will Hughes on Nathan Collins before the ball crossed the line, preventing VAR from intervening. Glasner mentioned that Barrott admitted his error but was not upset by it, stating to Sky Sports: "It shows he is a great man, a good guy. It is over. It is what it is."

Glasner Not Dwell on Referee Error

Despite this setback, Glasner focused on aspects within their control, noting areas where the team could have performed better. He acknowledged that Palace were not in their best rhythm but did not use it as an excuse for their performance.

Palace's defeat follows a strong end to their 2023-24 season, where they went unbeaten in seven matches (six wins and one draw). Their last Premier League loss before this game was a 4-2 defeat to Manchester City in April. On Sunday, Palace managed 14 shots with an expected goals (xG) of 1.07, compared to Brentford's 1.39 xG from nine attempts.

Eze took seven of Palace's shots and grew more frustrated as the match progressed. Meanwhile, Marc Guehi had an unsteady performance amid transfer rumours linking him with Newcastle United. Glasner reassured fans about Guehi's focus, saying: "Everyone could see he was completely focused on Crystal Palace and the game today."

Brentford's Consistent Scorers

This match marked the 12th time both Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo scored in a Premier League game for Brentford:

Brentford started their 2024-25 season strongly despite missing Ivan Toney, securing a London derby win over Crystal Palace with goals from Wissa and Mbeumo.

Glasner concluded that although his team did okay, it wasn't their best performance. He emphasised focusing on what they can influence moving forward.
