Goal or Not? Controversy in Mohun Bagan Win vs NEUFC, Coach Pedro Benali Says ‘Unfair’ Decision

By Rishab V M

In a thrilling encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday, Mohun Bagan Super Giant staged a remarkable comeback to defeat NorthEast United FC 3-2 in the Indian Super League 2024-25.

While the victory showcased Mohun Bagan's resilience, it was marred by a controversial equalizing goal that has sparked heated debate among players and fans alike.

The match was closely contested, with NorthEast United initially taking the lead. Mohun Bagan found themselves behind twice but managed to equalize each time, culminating in a decisive third goal late in the game. The most contentious moment came in the 61st minute when Subhasish Bose, the captain of Mohun Bagan, scored to level the match at 2-2.

The goal came after NorthEast goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh misjudged a header from Tom Aldred, failing to secure the ball. In the chaos that ensued, Bose capitalised on the opportunity, pushing the ball into the net.

NorthEast players and their coach, Juan Pedro Benali, vehemently protested, arguing that Bose had fouled Gurmeet before scoring. Despite their appeals, the referee and his assistant ruled the goal legitimate, allowing the match to continue.

A Coach's Frustration

Benali expressed his displeasure regarding the incident, referring to the nature of football as sometimes being "unfair." He pointed to the condition of his goalkeeper's arm, which was bleeding, as evidence of the intense physicality involved in the game.

"You can play against 11 players, but not against the elements. You only need to see the arm of our goalkeeper, Gurmeet Singh, covered in blood; that is enough," Benali lamented. (quoted as saying by KhelNow)

Despite his disappointment, Benali acknowledged the team's shortcomings. "You should see Gurmeet's arm, it's bleeding. It's unfair. We should've defended better for the third goal, and we couldn't convert the many chances we had. But we showed that we can go toe-to-toe with a big team like Mohun Bagan," he said as per a press release.

His comments reflect both frustration and pride in his players' performance, emphasizing their ability to compete with a formidable opponent.

When questioned about the referee's decisions, Benali took a diplomatic approach. "The referee does his job; I do mine. I'm proud of the job I do," he stated. However, he refrained from making direct criticisms, reiterating that "football is unfair sometimes."

The match ended with Jason Cummings scoring the late winner for Mohun Bagan, sealing a dramatic 3-2 victory. While the result shows Mohun Bagan's tenacity, the controversy surrounding Subhasish Bose's equalizer continues to stir discussions among fans and pundits.

The incident raises important questions about officiating and the physicality of the game, ensuring that this match will be remembered not just for the goals scored but for the heated debate it ignited.
