Graham Potter expressed excitement akin to Christmas upon becoming West Ham's new head coach. The former Chelsea manager was confirmed as Julen Lopetegui's replacement on Thursday, following the latter's dismissal a day earlier. Potter signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Hammers, who are currently 14th in the Premier League, having accumulated only 23 points from 20 matches this season.
West Ham had initially aimed for European competition under Lopetegui but fell short of expectations. Potter is eager to embrace the challenges ahead. "It's a proud day to be head coach of this amazing club, big tradition, big history, big expectations, big challenge," Potter stated. "I'm really excited, it's a bit like Christmas. Christmas for the adults, not the best of sleeps last night but just from the excitement."

The appointment marks Potter's return to management after his departure from Chelsea in April 2023. During his seven-month tenure at Chelsea, he secured only 12 wins out of 31 games, resulting in a win rate of 38.7%. Prior to that, he guided Brighton to a ninth-place finish in his final full season with them.
Reflecting on his time away from coaching, Potter mentioned it was crucial to choose the right opportunity at the right moment. He said, "It's been 20 months of a good rest. In that time, you speak to a lot of people. Lots of conversations with different owners, different directors." He felt an immediate connection with West Ham upon discussions.
When asked if he felt he had something to prove after his brief stint at Chelsea, Potter responded by referencing Pep Guardiola: "When I hear [Pep] Guardiola say he's got something to prove then we all have." He believes that professional sports require constant proof of one's abilities and that it motivates him daily.
Potter is confident in his identity and achievements despite past setbacks. "I'm comfortable with who I am, what I've done and clearly no one's perfect," he remarked. He views life as a balance between successes and failures and feels he's grown as both a person and coach through these experiences.
The new chapter for Potter begins with West Ham's FA Cup third-round match against Aston Villa on Friday. He looks forward to meeting players and fans alike while aiming to steer the club towards better performances in upcoming fixtures.
Potter acknowledges West Ham's passionate fanbase and their deep understanding of football. He appreciates their loyalty and is eager to meet supporters as he embarks on this new journey with the club.
