Manchester City Women's captain, Alex Greenwood, expressed her surprise at the dismissal of head coach Gareth Taylor just days before the Women's League Cup final. The team has struggled since narrowly missing out on the Women's Super League title last year and currently sits fourth in the standings. They trail Chelsea by 12 points and are one point behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand.
Greenwood emphasised that her main priority is to unite the team and maintain focus on their upcoming final at Pride Park. "My role as captain is to bring the team together and make sure the focus remains the same - which is on the final on Saturday and the run of games we've got coming up," she stated. Despite her initial shock, Greenwood quickly shifted her attention to what lies ahead for the team.

Taylor's tenure saw him guide Manchester City to significant achievements, including reaching advanced stages in three cup competitions this season. Under his leadership, City remains contenders in the Women’s Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup. Taylor's record includes winning 117 out of 161 matches across all competitions, securing both an FA Cup in 2020 and a League Cup two years later.
The club has appointed former coach Nick Cushing as Taylor's successor. Cushing previously managed Manchester City from 2013 to 2020, leading them to their only WSL title in 2016. He also won an FA Cup in 2017 and two League Cups during his tenure. Recently managing New York City FC in MLS, Cushing brings a wealth of experience back to Manchester.
Greenwood expressed enthusiasm about Cushing's return: "We were excited by that appointment because he knows the club really well." She highlighted his winning mentality and shared insights from their positive meeting earlier this week. "It was ultimately about winning and what is achievable," she added, stressing that immediate focus is on Saturday's match.
Despite not being informed about specific reasons for Taylor's departure, Greenwood respects the decision made by the club. She acknowledged that adapting quickly to changes is crucial for maintaining team morale and performance during this pivotal time.
The team's immediate goal remains clear: concentrate on winning upcoming matches while adjusting to new leadership dynamics under Cushing’s guidance. With a history of success at Manchester City, there is optimism surrounding his ability to steer them through current challenges effectively.
