Pep Guardiola has defended Manchester City's lack of trophies this season by highlighting their potential to qualify for the Champions League. Despite not securing any major titles, City could still be among the English teams in Europe's top competition. This season marks the first time since 2016-17 that City hasn't won any of the four major trophies.
Currently, Manchester City trails Liverpool by 18 points in the league standings. Liverpool has already secured the Premier League title, ending City's streak of four consecutive wins. City's early exits from both the Champions League and EFL Cup added to their disappointing campaign.

In a surprising turn, Crystal Palace defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final, claiming their first major trophy. This loss marked City's second consecutive defeat in the FA Cup final, having lost to Manchester United in 2024. City has now finished as runners-up in this competition seven times.
Despite these setbacks, Guardiola's team did secure a victory in the Community Shield back in August. They triumphed over Manchester United 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. However, they have yet to confirm their spot in next season's Champions League.
Guardiola emphasised that qualifying for the Champions League is crucial for every club involved. He noted that while Newcastle won the Carabao Cup and Liverpool claimed the Premier League title, other teams like Chelsea and Tottenham are still vying for European success.
Liverpool and Arsenal have already secured their spots in next season's Champions League. Five teams are competing for the remaining three places. City currently sits sixth but can move up to third with a win against Bournemouth at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
The Opta supercomputer predicts an 85.7% chance of City finishing in the top five this season. Their most probable position is third at 57.7%. Guardiola stressed that securing four points from their last two games would ensure Champions League qualification.
"We played a really good [FA Cup] final, not enough to win it," said Guardiola. "We have two games left; we need four points to be in the Champions League next year." His comments underline how vital it is for City to focus on these upcoming matches.
