Guardiola Acknowledges Challenges Ahead For Injury-Hit Manchester City This Season

Pep Guardiola highlights the difficulties Manchester City will face this season due to injuries to key players. With expectations high, he acknowledges that maintaining their success will be a challenge.

Pep Guardiola has expressed concerns about Manchester City's current injury woes, which he believes could hinder their ability to replicate past successes. The Premier League champions recently saw their 32-game unbeaten league streak end with a defeat at Bournemouth, following a midweek loss to Tottenham in the EFL Cup fourth round. This marked the first time City have lost consecutive matches across all competitions since September 2023.

Guardiola acknowledged the high expectations surrounding his team but anticipated more losses due to injuries and stronger competition. "I know our standards, but we've lost just one game. Maybe we are going to lose again in the Premier League against Brighton and against Tottenham and against Liverpool," Guardiola told reporters, referring to their next three Premier League games.

Guardiola Faces Tough Season with Injuries at Man City

The manager highlighted that City is only two points behind Liverpool, a formidable team. Despite starting well in the Champions League, Guardiola noted that people expect them to win every league game and achieve the treble annually. He explained that achieving such feats requires everything aligning perfectly, including avoiding injuries, which is not feasible this season.

City will be without key players like Ballon d'Or winner Rodrigo and Oscar Bobb for much of the campaign. John Stones, Jack Grealish, and Ruben Dias are also sidelined and did not travel to Portugal. Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake, and Kyle Walker are dealing with issues despite being part of the squad.

Kevin De Bruyne and Savinho are on the mend, while Erling Haaland is fit. City currently sits third in their Champions League group after securing two wins and a draw. They aim for a third consecutive European victory against Portuguese champions Sporting CP, who are eighth but remain unbeaten this season.

Guardiola's team previously secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Sporting in the 2022 Champions League last 16. They aim to extend their record run of unbeaten games in the competition to 27. "They play quite similar like we faced two seasons ago; the pattern is so clear," Guardiola added.

Sporting CP has changed players but retained manager Ruben Amorim's mentality. Amorim will join Manchester United at the start of the international break. Guardiola's side faces challenges but remains focused on maintaining their competitive edge despite injuries.
