Guardiola Taking Over Italy: Not An Impossible Dream, Says Minister

Pep Guardiola is being talked about as a realistic candidate for the Italy job, rather than a fantasy figure. Italian Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi believes the former Manchester City manager should be viewed as attainable. Italy are searching for a new head coach after Gennaro Gattuso stepped down following the failure to reach the World Cup.

Guardiola has ended a decade in charge of Manchester City, during which 20 trophies arrived. That haul includes six Premier League titles and the Champions League, confirming Guardiola among football’s most successful modern coaches. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager is expected to step away from club duties for a period.

Guardiola to Italy: Not Impossible Dream

Abodi argued that the Italian federation should not rule out Guardiola when assessing candidates. "We'd have to understand if Guardiola wants to allow himself this, considering how much of Italy is in his life journey and I believe in his sentiments too," Abodi told Sky TG. "He is one of the possible options, certainly not an impossible dream."

The minister underlined that coaching a national team demands a different approach to club work. "He is a very important coach, but the job of a national team coach is different, and we'd have to see if an extraordinary club tactician wants to also become an extraordinary national team coach. I think this is a challenge that sooner or later Guardiola will want to do. Its not about money, but ambition and dreams."

Guardiola’s appeal comes from sustained success in England. Guardiola is the only manager to win four English top-flight titles in succession, from 2020-21 through to 2023-24. Manchester City also reached 100 points in the 2017-18 Premier League season under Guardiola, the only team to hit that mark.

Across Guardiola’s Premier League tenure, the points return stands out statistically. Guardiola has the best points-per-game average of any manager to lead at least 20 matches in the competition, with 2.28 points per game. These numbers reinforce why figures in Italian football consider Guardiola a serious contender for the national role.

The statistical impact has been widely highlighted by analysts.

For Italy’s decision-makers, such data supports Abodi’s stance that Guardiola is not beyond reach.

Italy now must weigh Guardiola’s potential interest against other candidates and the specific needs of a national setup. Abodi’s remarks frame Guardiola as an ambitious choice who may eventually seek the international stage. The Italian search continues, with Guardiola’s future plans likely to influence how realistic this scenario becomes.
