Guardiola Discusses New Champions League Format As An Important Lesson For Manchester City

Pep Guardiola reflects on the new Champions League format, describing it as a significant lesson for Manchester City after their challenging journey to the knockout stages.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed reservations about the revamped Champions League format, despite his team advancing to the play-offs. City narrowly avoided elimination after a challenging match against Club Brugge at Etihad Stadium. Raphael Onyedika's goal had put City on the brink of an early exit, but goals from Mateo Kovacic and Savinho, along with a Joel Ordonez own goal, secured their progression.

City's advancement marks their 12th consecutive season reaching the knockout stages, a feat only matched by Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain since the 2013-14 season. However, City finished 22nd in the new 36-team table, trailing teams like Celtic and PSV. Guardiola remarked on the difficulty of the new format, stating, "I would say I don't like it because we suffer a lot."

Guardiola on Champions League Format Lessons

Guardiola acknowledged that City's form this season has been inconsistent. They ended with three wins and two draws from eight matches. He noted that being close to elimination was a valuable lesson for both him and his players. "We were on the perch, 45 minutes to be out," he said, emphasizing that nothing should be taken for granted in football.

The upcoming play-off draw in Switzerland will see City face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid. Guardiola is aware of the challenges ahead but remains hopeful as reinforcements are expected. New signings Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis will be eligible for selection in the play-offs.

Guardiola is optimistic about City's prospects in two weeks when they hope to have more players available. "Players will come back; we have new signings," he stated. Despite Carlo Ancelotti's preference to avoid facing City after Real Madrid's win over Brest, Guardiola remains cautious about their chances against top teams.

Reflecting on Madrid and Bayern's dominance in European competitions, Guardiola commented on their status: "One is the king of the competition; the other is the second or third king." He acknowledged that these teams are currently stronger than City but remains focused on overcoming challenges.

Savinho's Impact and City's Resilience

Guardiola praised Savinho for his impact during City's comeback against Brugge. "The first half was so academic; we missed a spark," he noted. Savinho's energy changed the game dynamics by creating opportunities shortly after coming on. This resilience helped City find crucial goals when needed most.

Despite their loss to City, Club Brugge managed to secure a spot in the play-offs by finishing 24th due to goal difference as Stuttgart dropped out. Brugge will face either Atalanta or Borussia Dortmund in their next round of matches.

The journey ahead for Manchester City is challenging yet promising with potential reinforcements bolstering their squad strength as they prepare for formidable opponents like Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in upcoming encounters.
