Guardiola Lauds Haaland As Pressing 'Animal' Boosting City's Attack

Pep Guardiola praises Erling Haaland for his exceptional pressing ability and improved physical shape, highlighting his contribution to Manchester City's recent victories and his unique achievement of scoring against all Premier League teams he has faced.

Pep Guardiola has praised Erling Haaland for his relentless pressing and believes the Manchester City striker is in better physical condition than last season. Haaland netted his 10th hat-trick for City, helping them come from behind to beat Ipswich Town 4-1 on Saturday. This brings his tally to four goals from two Premier League matches in the 2024-25 season.

The Norwegian forward has now scored against all 23 teams he has faced in the Premier League. Only Harry Kane, who has scored against all 32 teams he has faced, surpasses this record. Despite this achievement, Guardiola is most impressed with Haaland's off-the-ball work.

Haaland: The Pressing 'Animal'

Guardiola stated: "I like when he runs a lot. I like when he presses like an animal. I like it. It helps to score a goal. When you are connected defensively, you are connected offensively." He added that Haaland's body language is intimidating for defenders, saying: "Imagine a central defender has the ball and he makes a sprint with this body and legs moving. It's scary."

Last season, Haaland scored 27 top-flight goals to win his second Golden Boot despite missing nearly two months due to a foot injury. Guardiola believes Haaland has overcome his physical issues from last season. "He feels good," said Guardiola. "Last season he always had problems in the hips, in the ankles, in the knee."

This season, Haaland is taking better care of himself with the help of physios and appears sharper during training sessions. Guardiola noted: "After training sessions he stays longer to practice crosses and control. Last season it never happened because he was not perfect."

Importance of Physical Perfection

Guardiola emphasised that Haaland needs to be in perfect physical condition to perform at his best level. He explained: "With his body, he has to be perfect to perform at that level." The club's organisation plays a crucial role in ensuring players are comfortable and can perform optimally.

The manager highlighted that even if Haaland doesn't score, his defensive efforts are non-negotiable. "If you don't score a goal, it's fine. But you need to do it," said Guardiola.

Haaland's dedication to improving his game and maintaining peak physical fitness is evident this season. His commitment during training sessions reflects his desire to excel both offensively and defensively.

As Manchester City continues their campaign, Haaland's form and fitness will be pivotal in their quest for success in the Premier League.
