Guardiola Confirms Nico O'Reilly Will Feature In FA Cup Semi-Final For Manchester City

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Nico O'Reilly will play in the upcoming FA Cup semi-final after his standout performance against Bournemouth, where he assisted both goals in a comeback victory. This marks another significant achievement for Manchester City.

Manchester City secured a spot in the FA Cup semi-finals after a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth, thanks to Nico O'Reilly's impressive performance. The young player came off the bench and assisted both goals, ensuring City's comeback win. This achievement marks City's seventh consecutive appearance in the semi-finals, where they will face Nottingham Forest at Wembley in late April.

O'Reilly's contributions have been significant this season, with five goal involvements in four FA Cup matches. He shares this record with Ipswich Town's Jack Clarke for the most by a Premier League player in the 2024-25 competition. Reflecting on his performance, O'Reilly expressed gratitude for the opportunities provided by his manager and teammates.

O'Reilly Set for FA Cup Semi-Final Action

Pep Guardiola praised O'Reilly's impact, stating: "Nico scored two goals against Plymouth and the impact today was outstanding. He's going to play in the semi-final for sure!" Despite acknowledging a lacklustre season overall, Guardiola emphasised the significance of reaching seven consecutive FA Cup semi-finals.

Guardiola admitted responsibility for City's underwhelming season but highlighted their consistent success in reaching the FA Cup semi-finals as an extraordinary achievement. "We did it. Seven times in a row reaching the semi-finals in the FA Cup," he said. "I am sorry to tell you, but this is outstanding."

During Sunday's match, City dominated with 17 shots and an expected goals (xG) of 3.43 compared to Bournemouth's five attempts and 1.67 xG. Despite Erling Haaland missing an early penalty and Evanilson scoring for Bournemouth, City maintained control throughout much of the game.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola acknowledged his team's struggle after halftime, noting that they couldn't maintain their first-half performance. "The first half was good from us," he told BBC Sport. "We played the game we needed to play, but we couldn't keep it for the second half."

Looking Ahead

Despite winning one title already this season—the Community Shield—Guardiola remains focused on qualifying for next year's Champions League as their main objective moving forward. He stated: "We won one title already... We have an incredible target to qualify for the Champions League next season."

This victory highlights Manchester City's resilience and determination as they continue their pursuit of success in domestic competitions while aiming to secure European qualification once again.
