Pep Guardiola attributes the success of Spanish football coaches to their strong tactical development from a young age. Guardiola, who has led Manchester City to four consecutive Premier League titles, will face fellow Spaniard Julen Lopetegui when his team plays West Ham on Saturday.
Guardiola explained that Spanish coaches excel because they focus on tactics and methodologies early in their careers. "The secret is [Spanish coaches] work really well from early ages on tactics, on methodologies, to understand the game," he told Man City's official media channels. "So in a team sport, you need to acknowledge why things happen."

Guardiola believes that understanding the game is crucial for success in football. He said, "Today, all the managers and coaches are really well prepared. That's why the football is getting better and better." This summer has been particularly successful for Spain internationally, with La Roja winning Euro 2024 and their Under-23s securing gold at the Paris Olympics.
The Premier League also features other Spanish managers like Mikel Arteta, Unai Emery, and Andoni Iraola. Guardiola shared that competition drives him forward. "I think the competition itself ignites something in all of us. Why should it stop? I think when it stops, you should retire," he said.
West Ham's Michail Antonio has been pivotal for his team, contributing to 99 Premier League goals (67 goals, 32 assists). He could become the first player to reach 100 goals for the club. Antonio has had significant success against Manchester City with five goal involvements (three goals, two assists).
Manchester City's Erling Haaland has an impressive record in August, scoring 16 goals in 10 Premier League appearances. He averages a goal every 52 minutes, which is the best minutes-per-goal ratio by a player in a particular month in Premier League history (min. 500 minutes played).
Manchester City have never lost any of their 16 Premier League meetings with West Ham under Guardiola (W14 D2). This equals Alex Ferguson's record against Charlton. The champions remain unbeaten in 21 Premier League games this year (W18 D3), marking their longest unbeaten run from the start of a calendar year.
City have scored more away goals against West Ham than any other opponent in the Premier League (42). Their 25 goals at London Stadium are also the most an away team has scored at a specific venue since its opening in 2016-17.
West Ham have not won any of their last 17 Premier League meetings with City (D3 L14) since September 2015. They have conceded at least once in each of their last 10 home games in the league. Only Liverpool and Nottingham Forest have had more shots than West Ham this season (32), but only three teams have fewer attempts on target.
"Managers always drink knowledge from the staff, from the players—it's not always me to the other people," Guardiola added. "It's a back and forth, not in just one direction." He emphasised that having a positive environment is crucial for success: "Just to have nice people around you is the most important thing."
The Opta win probability gives Manchester City a strong chance of victory at 64%, compared to West Ham's 16.4% and a draw at 19.6%. The Hammers' last home win against City was back in October 2014 at Upton Park.
This match promises to be an exciting encounter as both teams aim to secure crucial points early in the season.
