Pep Guardiola has urged his Manchester City squad to improve as they prepare to face Ipswich Town at the Etihad on Saturday. Despite starting their Premier League title defence with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea, Guardiola was not entirely satisfied with the performance.
City had more shots and shots on target than Chelsea but underperformed their expected goals (xG) by 1.23. Guardiola expressed his surprise, stating, "I didn't expect it. We are away from our best so three points is the good news. The bad news is we have 65 games ahead of us." He emphasised the importance of knowing each other well after nine seasons together and having a clear plan both defensively and offensively.

Meanwhile, Ipswich Town began their Premier League return with a 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Portman Road. Despite the defeat, Ipswich restricted Liverpool to just three first-half shots, none of which were on target, while managing two shots on Alisson's goal themselves.
Erling Haaland will be a key player for Manchester City against Ipswich. Having scored against Chelsea last weekend, Haaland has netted at least once against all 22 teams he has faced since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2022. August is particularly fruitful for him, with 13 goals in nine appearances during this month.
For Ipswich, Omari Hutchinson showed promise in their match against Liverpool. Hutchinson registered an xG of 0.27 out of Ipswich's total of 0.45, taking the most shots (three) and winning possession six times, more than any other Ipswich player.
Guardiola highlighted the need for improvement despite the win over Chelsea. "There is a plan, defensive, offensive," he said. "But afterwards, it's how we celebrate the good moments and come back from the bad moments. That's what defines these teams and no one talks about it."
Kieran McKenna, Ipswich's manager, acknowledged areas for improvement following their second-half performance against Liverpool. "We know we can improve in the second half," McKenna stated. "Liverpool really hit their stride during that period and there's bits we can do better there to make the game more competitive."
The prediction heavily favours Manchester City to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. According to Opta's data-led simulations, City have an 81.6% chance of winning, while Ipswich have only a 7.3% chance of causing an upset.
City have won 17 of their last 18 Premier League matches against promoted sides (D1) since losing 2-1 at home to Leeds in April 2021. They are also unbeaten in their last 44 home games across all competitions (W37 D7), making it the eighth longest such run among English top-flight clubs.
This will be Ipswich's first encounter with City at the Etihad Stadium after winning their last two visits to Maine Road in November and December 2000. However, they haven't scored in any of their last seven away league games against reigning top-flight champions (D1 L6), losing the last three by an aggregate score of 15-0.
If Ipswich lose at the Etihad, it will mark their first time starting a league campaign with two straight defeats since the 2006-07 Championship season and in the top flight since 1985-86.
"There's positives to take and lessons to learn," McKenna added about their performance against Liverpool. "I think it's a game that stands us in pretty good stead."
