Guardiola Understands Real Madrid's Decision To Boycott Ballon D'Or Ceremony Amid Controversy
Pep Guardiola respects Real Madrid's choice to skip the Ballon d'Or event, stating it's their decision. Rodri claimed the top prize in Paris after aiding Manchester City in securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title and being part of Spain's Euro 2024-winning team. His significance is evident as City remained unbeaten in all 34 Premier League matches he played this year.
Rodri edged out Vinicius Junior for the award, leading to controversy as the winger and his club opted not to attend upon learning he wouldn't win. Vinicius had an impressive season, scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists, contributing to Real Madrid's La Liga and Champions League victories. Guardiola empathises with Vinicius, acknowledging his deserving performance.

Guardiola remarked on the subjective nature of the award, noting that journalists worldwide vote, not just a select group. He mentioned past instances where results could have varied, highlighting Erling Haaland's achievements last year. "If they want to congratulate, that's fine. If not, that's fine as well," Guardiola stated about Real Madrid's decision.
Rodri became only the third Spaniard to win the Ballon d'Or after Alfredo di Stefano and Luis Suarez. He was also the first Spaniard in the top three since Andres Iniesta in 2012. Guardiola praised Rodri's speech, which touched on family, Manchester City, and Spanish football's impact over the last decade.
Guardiola reflected on Spain's football success over recent years, including a World Cup and European Championship victory. He recalled how players like Xavi and Iniesta couldn't win due to Lionel Messi's dominance. "He's a monster and the father of the monster is Messi," Guardiola said about Messi's influence.
Guardiola emphasised that being among the top contenders is already an achievement. He told Rodri and Haaland that reaching such heights should bring satisfaction regardless of winning or not. The diversity of opinions makes football interesting, according to Guardiola.
The recognition of Rodri highlights his contributions to both club and country. His accolade underscores Spanish football's significant role in recent years despite fierce competition from legends like Messi and Ronaldo.
