Guardiola Highlights Real Madrid's Resilience Despite Injury Challenges Ahead Of Champions League Clash

Pep Guardiola emphasises Real Madrid's strong performance during injury challenges as they prepare for a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City. Despite both teams facing injuries, Guardiola acknowledges Madrid's consistency and competitive spirit.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has acknowledged Real Madrid's knack for excelling under pressure as they prepare for their Champions League play-off. Carlo Ancelotti's team will visit the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, grappling with several defensive injuries. Key players like Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, and Eder Militao are sidelined. David Alaba and Lucas Vazquez will also miss the match due to injuries.

The two teams face off in a high-stakes two-legged play-off after finishing 11th and 22nd in the new 36-team standings. This marks the fourth consecutive season City and Madrid meet in the knockout stages, a rare occurrence in European Cup history. Manchester City has faced Madrid 13 times in the Champions League, winning four, drawing five, and losing three matches.

Guardiola on Real Madrid's Injury Resilience

Real Madrid's win rate against City is just 25%, their lowest against any team they've played five or more times in this competition. Despite City's own injury struggles this season, Guardiola admits that Madrid has managed these issues better, maintaining their position at the top of La Liga.

"I think both teams have had problems in terms of injuries during the season. Madrid handled it much better than us because they are still top of the league and fighting against Atletico Madrid," Guardiola told reporters on Monday. "That shows again the consistency they have. In the end, they are huge competitors. We know it."

The last encounter between these teams was in April 2024 at Manchester after a thrilling first-leg draw at Bernabeu ended 3-3. The second leg saw Kevin de Bruyne equalising Rodrygo's goal, leading to extra-time and penalties where Andriy Lunin saved crucial spot-kicks to send Real through.

Real Madrid's Offensive Strength

Since then, Real has bolstered their attack by signing Kylian Mbappe alongside Rodrygo, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Junior. Only Lionel Messi and Karim Benzema have been directly involved in more Champions League goals against City than Vinicius and Rodrygo.

"They are exceptional," Guardiola remarked about Madrid's formidable attack. "How they combine, the runners, the ability one-against-one... all four are exceptional." He emphasised reducing their involvement as much as possible while acknowledging their inevitable impact.

City's Current Challenges

This season has been challenging for City on the pitch; they currently sit fifth in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by 15 points. Ruben Dias joined Guardiola for pre-match duties on Tuesday and described this campaign as his toughest since joining City in 2020.

Despite these challenges, Dias remains hopeful about City's prospects of securing silverware this season, particularly in the Champions League. "I'm a firm believer that even in the most difficult scenario... you can still do something beautiful," he said.

Dias highlighted belief in their talent as key to overcoming obstacles: "We know how difficult our opposition is... but it's a question of believing in what we have... we have loads of talent." With confidence and proper utilisation of resources, Dias believes success is achievable.
