Guillermo Ochoa Swansong at Estadio Azteca? Mexico Legend Likely Has Played his Last Match
Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa may have made his final appearance for Mexico after featuring in El Tri's final Group A clash against Czechia at the World Cup 2026 on Wednesday (June 24).
The veteran goalkeeper, who has already confirmed that he will retire after the tournament, brought the curtain closer on one of the most iconic international careers in Mexican football history.

The 40-year-old became one of the select few players to appear in six FIFA World Cups, adding another remarkable milestone to a career that has spanned two decades. Ochoa first travelled to the World Cup in 2006 and later became Mexico's undisputed No. 1, producing unforgettable performances against the likes of Brazil, Germany and Poland across multiple editions. He was part of the squad in 2006 and 2010, but made his World Cup debut in 2014.
Mexico rounded off their Group A campaign with a comfortable victory over Czechia to finish top of the group heading into the Round of 32. After a goalless first half, Mateo Chávez broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with his maiden international goal before Julián Quiñones doubled the advantage seven minutes later. Alvaro Fidalgo scored a late goal as El Tri completed a 3-0 rout of Czechia and thus advanced to the knockouts with a 100 per cent record.
Guillermo Ochoa takes the Swansong at Estadio Azteca?
It is likely that Ochoa has played his final game for El Tri. The Mexican custodian is not expected to feature in the knockouts unless emergency and it feels that his journey has ended as a player on the field. He will still remain in the squad for the entire World Cup.
As Raúl Rangel is expected to continue as Mexico's first-choice goalkeeper in the knockout stages, Ochoa's appearance against Czechia could stand as his final outing on football's biggest stage. If so, it marks the end of an extraordinary international journey for a player whose name has become synonymous with Mexico's World Cup history and whose legacy will inspire future generations. And it will be a fitting end as well. Ochoa has spent the biggest part of his career at Estadio Azteca, donning the Club America jersey. Hence, if it was the swansong, Memo will leave with only good memories.
