Both the Maharshtra outfits are yet to reach the last four stage of the compeititon in either of the seasons and will be desperate to prove their worth this time.
Mumbai City FC have roped in Costa Rican manager Alexandre Guimaraes for the upcoming season replacing Nicolas Anelka.
Ahead of the Maharshtra derby, speaking at the press conference, Guimaraes said: "We are ready, we are prepared. After a long period of practice, everybody wants to play. Especially after watching the nice ceremony in Guwahati. So, we are prepared to start.
"We are aware of that . We have to play to our strengths and how we have prepared and play tough...Everybody wants to get points in the first game.
"This is the first match. We are focused on winning. I have played in Pune last year but now I am with Mumbai. A player's life is such and you have to focus on doing well for your team and give your 100%."
The Ranbir Kapoor owned franchise have signed former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid star Diego Forlan as their marquee player.
The 2010 World Cup Golden Ball winner will be accompanied by Haitian international Sony Norde and ace Indian striker Sunil Chhetri.
On Forlan's signing and his present condition, the manager said: "He has been practicing since day one in Dubai. He feels ok. The other players in the squad also feel ok. Now it's time to play."
Mumbai have quite a few fitness concerns ahead of their season opener. On the injury plagued players, he added: "From the possible players that we have, yes we have some situations that you know about injured players and some other guys.
"But we are confident that we can do ok with the squad that we have available for selection and get some points from here."
