Gurkirat Singh Delivers Late Drama As Punjab FC Hold Mumbai City FC In ISL Thriller

Punjab FC produced a late fightback to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Mumbai City FC in their MG Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on Monday.

Leandro Otormin's second-half penalty put the Islanders in front, but Gurkirat Singh rose to the occasion in the dying moments, scoring his first goal for Punjab FC to deny his former side all three points.

The contest remained fiercely competitive throughout, with both teams creating opportunities before Punjab's persistence finally paid off in the closing stages.

Otormin appeared to have secured the victory for Mumbai City when he converted from the spot in the 63rd minute, only for Gurkirat to deliver a decisive response in the 90th minute.

Punjab set the tone early with an aggressive pressing game, forcing Mumbai City to work hard in possession. The hosts created the first meaningful opportunity in the fourth minute when Rishikanta Meitei unleashed a right-footed long-range effort, which goalkeeper TP Rehenesh did well to keep out.

The opening exchanges were marked by physical challenges and quick transitions. While Punjab looked to exploit turnovers through their high-intensity approach, Mumbai City attempted to stretch the opposition with wide attacking movements and swift counter-attacks.

Mumbai City were dealt an early setback when Vikram Partap Singh was forced off following a challenge involving Rishikanta Meitei.

Farukh Chaudhary came on as his replacement. The visitors subsequently threatened to take the lead through Brandon Fernandes, but Punjab goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh reacted sharply, coming off his line to make an important save.

Punjab also made an adjustment before the interval, with Bishu Singh replacing Meitei in the 36th minute. The home side came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in first-half stoppage time when Khaiminthang Lhungdim's left-footed attempt from distance struck the angle of the woodwork. Despite the late scare, neither team managed to find the net before half-time.

Mumbai City returned from the break with greater attacking intent. Valpuia delivered a cross into the penalty area for Farukh Chaudhary, but the forward failed to make the required connection with his header.

Punjab introduced Gurkirat Singh in the 55th minute, replacing Vishal Yadav, as the hosts searched for a breakthrough of their own. However, it was Mumbai City who gained the advantage just past the hour mark.

The decisive moment came when Bijoy Varghese caught PN Noufal's ankle inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award a spot-kick to the visitors. Otormin stepped up and made no mistake, striking the penalty firmly beyond Arshdeep Singh to give Mumbai City a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute.

Mumbai City head coach Manolo Marquez made a double substitution four minutes later, sending on Tluanga for Brandon Fernandes and Wilmar Jordan for Otormin. Punjab responded with changes of their own, introducing Sanathoi Meitei and Arshvir Singh in place of Muhammad Suhail and Diego Raposo as they intensified their search for an equaliser.

The changes proved decisive for the home side. With the clock ticking towards full-time, Sanathoi produced a perfectly measured cross from the left flank into the penalty area. Gurkirat found himself unmarked, timed his movement brilliantly and powered a header into the net in the 90th minute.

The goal sparked celebrations for Punjab FC, with Gurkirat marking his first appearance on the scoresheet for the club against his former employers. His late intervention ensured that Punjab avoided defeat after trailing for much of the second half.

For Mumbai City FC, Otormin's penalty had put them within touching distance of victory, but their inability to protect the advantage proved costly. Punjab, meanwhile, were rewarded for their determination and late attacking push, with both sides ultimately settling for a point in Delhi.
