Viktor Gyokeres Pursues Premier League Vengeance Following Sporting CP Triumphs

Viktor Gyokeres aims to return to the Premier League, motivated by past setbacks. His impressive performance at Sporting CP has sparked interest from top clubs.

Viktor Gyokeres has expressed a strong desire to play in the Premier League, driven by a sense of unfinished business. Despite joining Brighton in 2017 from IF Brommapojkarna, he never played for them and was loaned out three times. His loan spells included stints at St. Pauli, Swansea City, and Coventry City, where he eventually signed permanently in January 2021.

During his time with Coventry City, Gyokeres scored 43 goals in 116 appearances across all competitions. This impressive performance led to a transfer to Sporting CP, where he continued to excel. In his debut season with Sporting, he netted 29 league goals, helping the team secure their first title in 19 years. The following year, he scored 39 goals to aid in retaining their championship.

Gyokeres Seeks Premier League Opportunity

The Swedish international's outstanding form has attracted attention from top English clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal. Gyokeres is eager to return to England and prove himself in the Premier League. "It's one of the biggest leagues in Europe," Gyokeres mentioned in an interview with L'Equipe. "I spent several years there without being able to play a single match. So, of course, it's something I would like to do. It would be great revenge."

Gyokeres' contract includes a €100 million release clause, but reports suggest Arsenal might offer around €70 million for him. However, the 27-year-old is more concerned about feeling valued at his next club than the transfer fee itself. "It's football; you never know," he stated. "I'm not thinking about it; we'll see what happens. The most important thing for me is to play for a club that really wants me."

His recent performances have established him as one of Europe's leading strikers. Since the start of the 2023-24 season, Gyokeres has scored 68 league goals—more than any other player in Europe's top ten leagues—with Harry Kane trailing behind at 62 goals. These goals came from chances worth a total of 53.6 expected goals (xG), indicating an overperformance of 14.4.

Comparisons with Top Strikers

When asked if he considers himself on par with renowned strikers like Harry Kane and Erling Haaland of Manchester City, Gyokeres confidently replied: "I'm definitely one of them." He added, "It's difficult to rank me but yes, I'm at the same table as them now." He believes his achievements at Sporting can be replicated anywhere else.

Gyokeres remains optimistic about his future prospects and is determined to showcase his talents further on bigger stages. "You haven't seen the best of Gyokeres yet," he declared confidently.
