Habib Beye Aims To Build A Dominant Marseille Team

Habib Beye, appointed head coach of Olympique de Marseille, plans to reconstruct a dominant, vertical team that excites supporters while leveraging the club’s recent strengths. His approach emphasises emotional connection with the city and disciplined, high-intensity football as Marseille seeks to climb the Ligue 1 table.

Habib Beye starts work as Marseille head coach facing pressure to revive form before the Brest trip, with the Ligue 1 side winless in three league matches and chasing third-placed Lyon, while also trying to stabilise one of France’s biggest clubs after Roberto De Zerbi’s departure earlier in February.

Marseille sit fourth in Ligue 1, five points behind Lyon in third place, and risk matching their longest winless run since March-April 2024 if they fail to beat Brest, having avoided going four league games without victory since a five-match sequence that spring.

Beye targets dominant Marseille side

Beye moves into the role having already lived the intensity of Marseille as a defender, yet the new head coach warns that tactical changes will not be fully visible against Brest on Friday, with limited time to work with the squad before the important league fixture.

"Its a great source of pride. Im very happy to be here, said Beye in his first press conference after his arrival on Wednesday. You know how attached I am to this club. Its a very special moment. I experienced it as a player, and now Im experiencing it as a coach. We need to get the emotions out. In the next 24 hours, make contact with the group, try to have an influence. The impact will be limited. We need to be a vertical team that plays football. With this quality of players, we need to be dominant. We need to get excited here, its important for the supporters. We need to value the work of OM in recent years. There has been spectacular football at times. You have to breathe this city, feel it, and embody it. You have to convey that. It's an asset for me. I'm going to have to be able to capture that."

Beye emphasises a vertical, front-foot style, speaking of dominance and energy as key themes, while also stressing Marseille must respect the work done in recent seasons, when the team often produced attacking football that matched the intensity of the city and the supporters.

Brest’s pressing game is central to the contest, with midfielder Lucas Tousart leading the league for pressures per 90 minutes among players with at least 300 minutes, recording 130, while Brest rank second in Ligue 1 2025-26 for pressed sequences per match with 481, behind only Angers on 503.

Mason Greenwood again draws attention for Marseille before facing Brest, having scored twice against the same opponents in August 2024 during the first Ligue 1 meeting, and already reaching 23 goals in all competitions for 2025-26, surpassing the 22 goals scored across the 2024-25 campaign.

Greenwood’s tally places the forward among elite Marseille seasons this century, with only Didier Drogba’s 32 goals in 2003-04, Florian Thauvin’s 26 in 2017-18 and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 30 in 2023-24 bettering Greenwood’s current return in a single campaign for the club.

Marseille vs Brest Ligue 1 match prediction and stats

Head-to-head figures favour Marseille for this Ligue 1 match prediction, as since Brest returned to the top flight in 2019-20, only Paris Saint-Germain with 11 wins have beaten Brest more often in the league than Marseille, who have eight victories against Brest in that period.

Brest’s home record against Marseille has shifted over time, with four defeats in the last six Ligue 1 meetings at Brest’s ground, alongside one win and one draw, after Brest remained unbeaten across the first nine home top-flight clashes, taking six victories and three draws before that downturn.

Recent defensive numbers raise concern for Marseille and could affect the Ligue 1 match prediction, with Marseille conceding 10 goals across the last three away games in all competitions, matching the number allowed in the previous 10 away fixtures combined and pointing to issues on the road.

In Ligue 1 action during 2026, Marseille hold the worst away defensive record so far, conceding nine goals, while Brest have become strong at home with four wins from the last five league games there, losing just once after previously managing one home victory in six, with three draws and two defeats.

Brest’s results against higher-ranked opposition add intrigue, as the team have collected 13 points against clubs currently in the top half of the Ligue 1 table this season, from a record of three wins, four draws and five defeats, more than any other side placed 10th or lower.

OPTA data offers a balanced view for the Ligue 1 match prediction, assigning Brest a 27.5 per cent chance of victory, a draw probability of 24.8 per cent and giving Marseille a 47.7 per cent likelihood of winning, reflecting both Marseille’s historical dominance and Brest’s current strength at home.

With Beye targeting greater control and emotion, Marseille arrive at Brest seeking to halt a poor league run, protect their position in the European race and manage defensive vulnerabilities against a high-pressing Brest side that has become tough at home and often takes points from teams in the top half.
