Havertz Penalty Seals Draw For Arsenal At Leverkusen In The Champions League Last-16 First Leg

Kai Havertz converts a late spot-kick to rescue a 1-1 draw for Arsenal against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League last-16 first leg. Andrich gave Leverkusen the lead, with Madueke's late intervention forcing the decisive penalty. The result leaves the tie finely poised ahead of the return leg.

Kai Havertz scored a late penalty against former club Bayer Leverkusen to secure a 1-1 draw for Arsenal in their Champions League last-16 first leg. Robert Andrich’s header had put Leverkusen ahead, before Havertz struck in the 89th minute to keep the tie finely balanced.

The contest stayed open across both halves, with Arsenal finishing the night slightly ahead on chances created. Kasper Hjulmand’s side produced more efforts on goal, yet Arsenal’s clearer openings meant the visitors left Germany feeling they had missed an opportunity to claim a first-leg lead.

Havertz penalty seals Arsenal draw in Leverkusen

Match data underlined that sense of frustration for Arsenal. They produced six attempts and recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.65, while Leverkusen registered 10 shots but only 0.88 xG. The numbers suggested Arsenal carved out higher-quality openings, despite spending long spells defending.

Those statistics gained extra weight because Leverkusen were close to setting a new club mark in the Champions League. Andrich’s goal had put them on track for four straight clean sheets in the competition for the first time. That hope disappeared when Arsenal’s substitutes shifted the late momentum.

The decisive moment arrived when Noni Madueke ran at a tiring Leverkusen defence in the final minutes. Madueke cut inside, and Malik Tillman brought the winger down with a clumsy trip. Havertz stepped up and squeezed the resulting penalty past Janis Blaswich into the bottom-left corner in the 89th minute.

Madueke’s impact carried statistical significance as well as scoreboard value. The winger became the first Arsenal substitute to win a penalty in a Champions League match since Emmanuel Eboue did so against Porto in March 2010. With Viktor Gyokeres already substituted, the responsibility from the spot fell to Havertz.

Havertz continued a perfect personal record from penalties in major European competitions. The forward has now converted all four spot-kicks taken in those tournaments. Two of those penalties came at the BayArena, one for Bayer Leverkusen against Porto in February 2020, and this latest one for Arsenal against Leverkusen.

The late goal also added another narrative layer to Havertz’s return to familiar surroundings. The Germany international once again influenced a big European night in Leverkusen, this time as an opponent. Arsenal gained a valuable away goal on a ground where Havertz has often performed well.

Kai Havertz match flow, early chances and Leverkusen pressure

Before the late twists, Leverkusen controlled much of the early play. Christian Kofane forced David Raya into a save in the seventh minute, then Ibrahim Maza drove a left-footed strike over the bar. Arsenal came close on a counter-attack in the 19th minute when Viktor Gyokeres set up Gabriel Martinelli, who struck the crossbar with a weaker-foot effort.

Leverkusen restarted the second half with similar intensity. Within seconds, a smart corner routine allowed Martin Terrier to meet a cross, and Raya tipped the header over. From the following corner, Alejandro Grimaldo’s delivery found Andrich at the far post, and Andrich escaped Eberechi Eze and Jurrien Timber to nod in.

Arsenal pushed harder after falling behind and created a major chance six minutes from the end. An unmarked Timber met a cross but headed over from close range, wasting a clear opening. That miss looked costly until Madueke drew the late foul that led to Havertz’s leveller.

Key match figures highlighted the balance of play and the fine margins involved.

Team Goals Shots xG
Bayer Leverkusen 1 10 0.88
Arsenal 1 6 1.65

The draw leaves everything to play for at Arsenal Stadium in the second leg. Leverkusen lose the chance of a milestone run of clean sheets, while Arsenal carry confidence from their stronger chances and Havertz’s penalty record. The tie remains finely balanced after a tight first meeting.
