The United States Women's team faced a narrow 2-1 defeat against Brazil in a friendly match. Despite the loss, head coach Emma Hayes remained optimistic about the experience gained. Catarina Macario scored early for the US, but Brazil's Kerolin equalised, and Amanda Gutierres secured a late winner. Hayes viewed the game as a valuable opportunity to test her squad against strong competition.
Hayes emphasised that progress should not solely be measured by results. "We mustn't always measure progress by outcome," she stated. This match featured the youngest USWNT lineup in 24 years, with an average of just 17.9 caps per player. Defender Emily Sonnett had more caps than the rest of her teammates combined, highlighting the team's inexperience.

Emma Hayes used this match to experiment with her squad, prioritising long-term development over immediate success. She explained, "If I only prioritise short-term success, of course I wouldn't make that many changes." The coach wanted to see how less experienced players performed against top-level opponents like Brazil.
Despite conceding an equaliser midway through the first half, Hayes praised her team's initial performance. "To be fair to the group, we started the game really well," she noted. The US played a strong first half but struggled to maintain their intensity in the second period.
The second half saw a dip in performance from the US team, who failed to register any shots on target while Brazil created several chances. Hayes acknowledged this inconsistency and recognised the need for improvement over a full match duration.
"A game is not 45 minutes long," Hayes remarked, pointing out that while they had a great first half, it wasn't enough in the second half. She stressed that this camp was about expanding and experimenting with the player pool to identify who is ready for international challenges.
Hayes expressed satisfaction with her decision to field less experienced players against Brazil rather than waiting for another opportunity next year. She said, "I'm glad I made the decision, even if you feel a little bit of short-term pain within it." This approach allowed her to gain insights into players' capabilities under pressure.
The coach highlighted Alyssa Thompson's inclusion as an example of learning what she didn't know before. By testing players like Thompson against strong teams like Brazil instead of weaker opponents, Hayes gained valuable insights into their potential and readiness.
