Spain's coach, Montse Tome, has clarified that Jennifer Hermoso's exclusion from the latest squad is purely for sporting reasons. Tome announced a 23-player roster for the Women's Nations League matches against Portugal. Hermoso, who was involved in a controversial incident with Luis Rubiales after the 2023 World Cup final, hasn't played for Spain since October last year.
Tome emphasised that her decision regarding Hermoso is unrelated to any off-field issues. "There's no reason other than a sporting one," she stated. Tome acknowledged Hermoso's efforts to return to the national team, noting her inclusion in the preliminary squad as evidence of her progress. "We believe the 23 players we have chosen are the ones we need for these two games," she added.

Hermoso has expressed her desire to rejoin the national team setup. She remains Spain's all-time leading scorer with 57 goals in 123 appearances. Tome acknowledged Hermoso's significance, stating, "Jenni has been and is an important player." The coach noted improvements in Hermoso's recent performances and recognised her commitment to returning to the national team.
Tome reiterated that no player is permanently excluded from selection. "I've said it many times there is no door closed to any player," she affirmed. The coach highlighted that their responsibility is to select players based on current needs, acknowledging that not everyone can be included at once.
The preliminary squad currently includes 71 players, demonstrating the depth of talent available for selection. Tome acknowledged Hermoso's experience and history with the national team as valuable assets. The focus remains on choosing players who best fit the team's requirements at any given time.
The situation highlights the competitive nature of international football selection and underscores Tome's commitment to assembling a squad capable of achieving success in upcoming matches.
