George Hirst Can Bring A New Dimension To Scotland's Attack In Nations League Play-Off Against Greece

Scotland assistant John Carver backs George Hirst to fill the void left by injured Lyndon Dykes. Hirst's physicality and recent form could enhance Scotland's chances in the Nations League play-off against Greece.

John Carver has expressed confidence in George Hirst's ability to step up for Scotland in their Nations League play-off against Greece. With Lyndon Dykes sidelined due to a calf injury, Hirst, who recently switched allegiance from England to Scotland, is seen as a suitable replacement. The 26-year-old scored his second Premier League goal of the season against Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Hirst's inclusion in the squad is part of a broader strategy by Steve Clarke, with three new players joining the team. Carver believes Hirst can replicate Dykes' physical presence and power in attack. "We've been monitoring him for months," Carver stated. "We lost Lyndon Dykes to injury, and he's a little bit similar to Lyndon."

Hirst Offers New Options for Scotland's Attack

Hirst joins fellow forwards Che Adams, Tommy Conway, Kevin Nisbet, and James Wilson in the squad. Lennon Miller also received his first senior call-up. Carver praised Hirst's intelligence and passion for football, noting that he has integrated well into the team. "He brings us a different dimension," Carver added after discussing various topics with Hirst on Sunday night.

In addition to the newcomers, two seasoned players have returned for Scotland's matches against Greece. Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson is back after recovering from an ACL injury that kept him out for a year. Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney also returns after missing games due to a hamstring injury sustained during Euro 2024.

Carver expressed excitement about having these experienced players back in action. "It's great," he said, hoping their presence will help Scotland build on their strong finish to 2024. He mentioned having a positive conversation with Tierney and anticipated Ferguson's arrival soon.

The return of Ferguson and Tierney adds freshness and boosts morale within the squad. Carver highlighted previous strong performances against teams like Poland, Croatia, and Portugal as sources of confidence heading into the upcoming matches.

The combination of new talent and returning experience aims to strengthen Scotland's chances in their crucial play-off match against Greece. The team hopes these changes will provide both energy and stability as they look forward to continuing their positive momentum.
