Group C Matchday 2 of AFC Asian Cup 2023 will get underway in Al Rayyan as Hong Kong and Iran will square off at the Khalifa International Stadium on Friday (January 19).
FIFA No. 150 Hong Kong equalised to surprise UAE early in the second half before the UAE took back the lead again after a moment of distraction. Hong Kong's team participated in the Asian Cup for the first time since 1968 on Sunday, although they have already lost all 11 of their games in the campaign.
However, Jorn Andersen's team has shown a lot of tenacity in recent games. They overcame two one-goal deficits to draw Turkmenistan in the 2026 World Cup qualification last year, and they also won a historic 2-1 over China earlier this month - their first victory against them in 39 years.
Hong Kong's defense has not been as spotless as it could be; in their previous seven games, they have conceded goals, despite only being kept off the scoresheet once in their last five games (a 2-0 loss to Saudi Arabia).
They have not lost a friendly match since drawing first blood-they lost 2-1 to Vietnam in 2012-more than ten years ago. This past weekend, Iran, one of the tournament favorites, made a strong first impression by scoring on four of their five aimed attempts.
The Iranians haven't lost or been defeated by an Asian opponent since March of the same year (2-0 against South Korea), when they were eliminated from the 2022 World Cup group stage with a 1-0 loss to the USA.
Amir Ghalenoei can hardly be too disappointed with his team's performance on the first day of play, but before Tamer Seyam's goal late in the first half on Sunday, Iran had not surrendered in eight straight Asian Cup group stage matches.
