Lionel Messi marked his 38th birthday on Monday with a solid yet goalless performance as Inter Miami played out a dramatic 2-2 draw against Palmeiras in their final Group A clash of the FIFA Club World Cup. The result was enough to send both sides into the last 16, with Palmeiras finishing top on goal difference and Inter Miami qualifying as runners-up.
Inter Miami began the match brightly, racing to a two-goal lead courtesy of strikes from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suárez.

Allende opened the scoring in the 16th minute, darting through the Palmeiras defence after a powerful 40-metre run and finishing coolly. Suárez added the second in the 65th minute with a spectacular curling effort from a tight angle that nestled in the top corner.
While Messi didn't find the net or register an assist, his overall influence on the game was evident. The Argentine legend had two shots on goal-one was on target but lacked the venom to trouble the goalkeeper, while the other- a dipping volley, sailed just over the crossbar. Had the second attempt been on target, it might have changed the complexion of the game.
Messi's dribbling and vision, however, remained sharp. Throughout the match, he executed several line-breaking passes and clever through balls that put the Palmeiras defence under pressure. Although none of these resulted in a goal, his creativity kept Miami ticking in the midfield.
Despite not registering any goal contributions, Messi earned a respectable match rating of 7.2/10 from us, showcasing his playmaking skills and football intelligence.
Palmeiras, though, mounted a strong comeback in the final 10 minutes. Substitute Paulinho pulled one back with a composed low finish before Mauricio smashed home the equaliser from the edge of the box after a defensive clearance fell kindly for him.
The draw sees Inter Miami become the only MLS team to reach the knockout stage, as both LAFC and Seattle Sounders bowed out after a thrilling 4-4 draw. While Messi didn't have a fairytale birthday goal, his presence and influence were once again crucial in helping his side advance on the world stage.
