Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting, having already agreed personal terms with the Swedish forward. Negotiations over the transfer fee are ongoing, with the Gunners hoping to secure a deal below Sporting’s £68 million valuation for the 27-year-old.
Gyokeres has been identified as one of Arsenal’s two primary attacking targets this summer, alongside RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. With manager Mikel Arteta keen to strengthen the squad early, sporting director Andrea Berta has reportedly stepped up efforts to sign Gyokeres following the confirmed arrival of midfielder Martin Zubimendi on Sunday.

Gyokeres, who joined Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, is believed to have agreed to a five-year contract at the Emirates. Brighton & Hove Albion, his former club, are expected to receive a portion of the transfer fee due to a sell-on clause. The Swedish striker has made no secret of his desire for a new challenge after scoring 54 goals for Sporting last season, and he is said to favour a move to Arsenal over interest from other Premier League sides, including Manchester United.
Gyokeres’s pace, power, and effectiveness in transition make him an ideal fit for Arteta’s high-pressing and fluid 4-3-3 system. His style complements the defensive solidity of Martin Zubimendi and the midfield dynamism of Declan Rice, providing Arsenal with balance and attacking variety. Should Arsenal also complete deals for players like Christian Norgaard and Benjamin Sesko, Gyokeres could be part of a highly flexible and potent front line, working in tandem with Bukayo Saka to dismantle deep-lying defenses. His physicality and work rate suit Arteta’s preference for a commanding No. 9 to lead the line and press from the front.
