Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has acknowledged that striker Alexander Isak cannot currently be part of the team due to ongoing transfer rumours. This follows Newcastle's 2-2 draw with Espanyol in a pre-season match, where Isak was notably absent. The Swedish forward, who netted 23 goals in the Premier League last season, is reportedly linked with a move to Liverpool.
Reports suggest Newcastle rejected an initial offer of approximately £110 million for Isak, valuing him at around £150 million. Isak missed the club's pre-season tour in Asia due to a minor thigh injury, but it is believed he has requested to leave Newcastle. Howe stated that discussions have taken place, but Isak remains separate from the main squad for now.

Howe commented on the situation, saying, "We've had discussions, and it's clear at the moment we can't have him involved with the group." He added that while disciplinary action hasn't been taken, Isak's future at Newcastle is still possible if circumstances change. Howe expressed a desire for Isak to rejoin the team when appropriate.
Away from transfer news, Newcastle's match against Espanyol ended in a draw after an exciting finish. Edu Exposito scored first for Espanyol in the 17th minute, but Matt Targett equalised shortly after with a header. A penalty conceded by Targett was saved by debutant Aaron Ramsdale.
Jacob Murphy put Newcastle ahead in the 77th minute after capitalising on Espanyol's defensive error. However, Kike Garcia's late header from Pere Milla's cross ensured Espanyol shared the spoils. Despite this result, Howe believes such matches are beneficial for his team's preparation.
The game statistics showed Newcastle had an expected goals (xG) total of 0.99 from nine shots compared to Espanyol's 1.18 from eight attempts. Howe noted that despite some disappointing moments, there were positives to take away as they prepare for their Premier League opener against Aston Villa on August 16.
"It was a good game in that respect because they were direct and gave us a taste of what a lot of Premier League teams won't hesitate to do here," Howe remarked about the match. He acknowledged areas needing improvement but also highlighted positive aspects and valuable playing time gained by players.
Howe concluded by emphasising that these pre-season games are crucial for building fitness and cohesion within the squad as they approach competitive fixtures. The focus remains on refining both individual performances and overall team strategy ahead of their upcoming challenges.
