Huijsen Acknowledges Need To Improve To Secure Spain Place Ahead Of World Cup 2026

Dean Huijsen accepts that a place in Spain's World Cup squad is not guaranteed, despite regular minutes for Real Madrid. The defender is part of Luis de la Fuente's 27-player group for March friendlies, yet sees this window as a test. Strong displays for club and country remain essential as Spain prepare for the World Cup in 2026.

Spain return to action for the first time since November, when a 2-2 draw with Turkiye finished their qualifying campaign. De la Fuente's team are unbeaten in 31 competitive fixtures, equalling Italy's record for a future World Cup winner. De la Fuente has overseen 26 of those matches, with a return of 20 victories and six draws.

The March schedule sees Spain host Serbia at Estadio de la Ceramica on Friday, then meet Egypt at RCDE Stadium three days later. These games offer Huijsen another chance to impress De la Fuente. The 20-year-old made an international debut last year and already holds six caps, yet accepts that form must keep improving before the World Cup.

Huijsen's domestic season with Real Madrid has been disrupted by several fitness issues, with 10 matches missed across all competitions. When available, Huijsen has started 35 of 37 games, underlining continued trust from the coaching staff. Passing numbers also stand out, with 2,125 completed passes in 2025-26, behind only Aurelien Tchouameni on 2,435 and Federico Valverde on 2,359.

Defensively, Huijsen leads Real Madrid for clearances, with 173 made so far this season. The former Bournemouth player still feels there is room to grow at club level. The centre-back believes the current international camp can help regain rhythm and consistency before the World Cup, while Spain continue a long unbeaten competitive run.

"I am very proud to be able to come to the national team.It is an honour to represent my country, Huijsen told reporters. I think I've had a period in which I haven't given the level that people know I can give, and I'm giving now.At Madrid, we are good as a team."

Spain's World Cup journey begins against Cape Verde on June 15, with De la Fuente's side drawn in Group H. Saudi Arabia and Uruguay are the other opponents, creating different tactical tests for Spain's defenders. Competition for places is strong, meaning Huijsen needs sustained reliability for Real Madrid to secure a seat on the plane.
