Hyderabad FC has terminated the contract of head coach Thangboi Singto after a string of poor results in the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season. The decision comes as the club struggles to improve its position, currently languishing at 12th place in the 13-team standings with only seven points from 11 matches.
Singto, who had been associated with Hyderabad FC since 2020, took over as head coach in July 2023 after serving as Assistant Coach and Technical Director (Youth). Despite his reputation as a nurturer of young talent, the results under his leadership have been dismal.

This season, Hyderabad managed just two wins and eight losses in 11 matches, leading to a win percentage of 18.18% and a points-per-game (PPG) average of 0.64.
| Season | Competition | Managed | Won | Drawn | Lost | PPG |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024-25 | Indian Super League | 11 | 2 | 1 | 8 | 0.64 |
| 2023-24 | Indian Super League | 22 | 1 | 5 | 16 | 0.36 |
With 110 matches under his belt as a manager, Singto has a career win percentage of 25.45%, with 28 wins to his name. Before joining Hyderabad FC, he managed Shillong Lajong, gaining recognition for his focus on developing young players. However, his recent struggles highlight the challenges he faced in revitalizing Hyderabad FC amid financial instability and ownership changes.
Hyderabad FC underwent a significant transformation this year, with the Jindal Group taking over ownership from Varun Tripuraneni. This brought financial stability to the club, including the settlement of pending dues and lifting of transfer bans. Despite these positive changes, the on-field performance under Singto’s guidance failed to meet expectations, prompting the management to seek new leadership.
In the interim, Assistant Coach Shameel Chembakath has been appointed to take charge until a permanent replacement is announced. The club faces two critical home fixtures: against NorthEast United on December 23 and East Bengal on December 28, which could define their season.
Singto’s departure marks the third managerial exit in the ongoing ISL season, following Carles Cuadrat (East Bengal) and Mikael Stahre (Kerala Blasters). While Singto’s tenure at Hyderabad FC has ended on a disappointing note, his long-standing association with Indian football and reputation as a youth developer leaves room for future opportunities in the sport.
