Hyderabad FC and Sreenidi Deccan are all set to play a dead rubber in Group A of Super Cup India, known as Kalinga Super Cup for sponsorship reasons, as the group's Round 3 matches takes place at the Kalinga Stadium on Friday (January 18).
However, the match is not just a dead rubber but the first-ever competitive Hyderabad derby between Sreenidi Deccan and Hyderabad FC as the two sides square off for bragging rights at the Kalinga Stadium Pitch 1.
Hyderabad FC didn't have a good record going into the competition because they haven't yet won in the Indian Super League 2023-24. Then, coach Thangboi Singto made the audacious decision to rest all of the international players and senior players in order to test his young players for the Kalinga Super Cup.
With players like Abdul Rabeeh, Ramhlunchhunga, Makan Chothe, and Lalchhanhima Sailo putting on strong performances against the Kolkata Giants, the youth contingent made a strong case for themselves. Despite scoring three goals in two games, the team lost both, which was indicative of their lack of experience.
Sreenidi Deccan, an I-League team, on the other hand, started with a solid 11 for both matches and put Mohun Bagan under pressure in the first game as well, thanks to a goal from William Alves that gave them a well-earned lead in the first half. Yet in the end, Mohun Bagan's superiority over the other team paid off as Armando Sadiku and Jason Cummings rallied Mohun Bagan to a victory.
In the following match against Sreenidi, East Bengal also made good use of their foreign players as Hijazi Maher and Javier Siverio broke the tie early in the first half. William Alves is the only player to find the goal for Sreenidi Deccan, which is crucial because players like David Castaneda and Kean Lewis have fallen short.
