I-League: Mohun Bagan rope in Australian midfielder Cameron Watson

Kolkata, Dec 19: Kolkata football giants Mohun Bagan on Monday have announced the signing of former Bengaluru FC's Australian midfielder Cameron Watson for the rest of the I-League season.

The defensive midfielder will replace his compatriot Diogo Ferreira, who was released by the club two days ago. Ferreira arrived at the club only this season but left the side without playing a single game. He mentioned family issues to place a transfer request to the Kolkata giants recently and the club decided to let the player go on a mutual consent.

"With immense pleasure we wish to inform that Mohun Bagan has recruited Watson Cameron Alexander John in place of Diogo Alexandre Alves Ferreira. Watson is in Australia, he will apply for visa tomorrow (Tuesday) at Melbourne," a club statement said.

The 30-year-old Australian was an academy player at Portuguese club FC Porto however never made a single appearance for them and mostly plied his trade in Australia with A-League, largely at Adelaide United for five seasons from 2010 to 2015.

He played for Bengaluru FC in the I-League last season and represented over 16 matches in the I-League and also helped in winning them the Federation Cup trophy.

However, after Bengaluru's jump to ISL was not contracted and he later chose to play for Madura United FC in Indonesia before being released just after one match.

Bagan are currently facing a lot of injury crisis in their midfield after the Mariners lost their best midfielder, Yuta Kinowaki, to injury following his collarbone injury against Churchill Brothers. The Japanese midfielder who signed for the Kolkata side will now go under the knife and will be out for three months.

Thus the recent inclusion of such an experienced player of I League will surely strengthen Sanjoy Sen's side and provide solid support at the heart of the midfield for the rest of the season.

Sitting third in the I-League table behind Minerva, Mohun Bagan AC will take on newcomers Neroca FC today after being held to a 1-1 draw by Shillong Lajong in their last engagement.
