Ian Maatsen Remains Hopeful For Netherlands Debut Despite Setback
Ian Maatsen is disappointed about not being selected for the Netherlands' Nations League squad. Despite his initial exclusion from the Dutch Euro 2024 squad, he was later called up as a replacement for the injured Frenkie de Jong. However, Ronald Koeman did not include him in the squad for matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Germany.
Maatsen, who played a crucial role in Borussia Dortmund's journey to the Champions League final last season before moving to Aston Villa from Chelsea, has yet to make his senior debut for the national team. Instead, he remains a key player in the Netherlands' Under-21 squad. Although frustrated by his omission from Koeman's selection, the 22-year-old is determined to wait for his opportunity.

"Of course this is a disappointment. I expected to have to report to the [senior] side," Maatsen said. "I could have withdrawn, but that's not who I am. Sometimes you have to accept things and not worry too much."
The Dutch Under-21s are set to play against North Macedonia Under-21s on Friday. Maatsen aims to prove himself at this level and earn his place in the senior team. "I have to show here that I am the best and can play for the Dutch national team," he stated.
Maatsen's commitment is evident as he continues to push himself despite setbacks. "I tried to enjoy myself to the fullest," he mentioned. "I was always raring to go. Even if it was just for a minute."
The young left-back remains hopeful of earning his first cap soon. "I wanted a cap but it hasn't come yet," he added.
Maatsen's journey reflects his resilience and dedication as he waits for his chance with the senior national team.
