The sacking of Igor Stimac as the head coach of the Indian football team has stirred a mixed bag of reactions among Indian football fans on June 17 -- Monday.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) decided to terminate Stimac's contract after a disappointing World Cup 2026 qualification campaign, a decision that was met with widespread relief from the fanbase.

"Igor Stimac gone. A step in the right direction, hope we sign a proper manager this time," wrote a fan.
"Igor Stimac's journey is over with #IndianFootball 🫂🗿 I waited for times like this 🫂 A small happiness during a tough tenure 😉," wrote another fan.
However, the saga is far from over. Stimac, who was dismissed after a virtual meeting held by AIFF officials, is planning to take legal action against the federation. He had earlier proposed that he would resign without any compensation if the AIFF top brass also took responsibility and resigned.
This proposal was rejected, leading Stimac to seek legal recourse. “The AIFF is also to blame. Now this matter is going legal, and a big battle is ahead,” Stimac stated, emphasizing his unwillingness to bear the full brunt of the team's shortcomings alone.
"Full support to Igor Stimac in this matter 🫂. AIFF top officials including President should resign and new management and coaching staffs should be appointed (on merit basis) to #IndianFootball ASAP👍🏿," tweeted a fan.
In what seemed like a parting shot, a fan tweeted, "This is the best thing Igor Stimac has done @stimac_igor thank you for saving your 'best' to the last, I hope they get kicked out too now," indicating that while Stimac's exit is seen as necessary, it is not a comprehensive solution.
Fans have shown varying degrees of support for Stimac’s stance. Statistics from the qualification campaign also fueled fans' dissatisfaction.
"Igor Stimac gone as head coach of India after a disappointing WCQ campaign. Just three goals scored in 6 games and 1 win. Interesting to see where India go from here because they’ve got more issues than just finding a new coach," a fan tweeted, pointing to the broader challenges facing Indian football.
"Igor Stimac is gone and won't be missed. But he shouldn't be the only fall guy. Questions need to be asked of AIFF, Kalyan Chaubey, and the Executive Committee," another fan tweeted, emphasizing the need for a thorough overhaul within the federation.
