Igor Stimac Unlikely To Quit Without Compensation, Blames AIFF for Not Keeping Its Promises: Report

By MyKhel Staff

Igor Stimac is unlikely to quit as the coach of the Indian football team unless 'fairly' compensated on his current contract with the All India Football Federation, reported TOI,

The 56-year-old Croat continue to mark a significant U-turn from his stance in March to step down from his role if he fails to take the national team to the unprecedented third round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Igor Stimac's tenure as the head coach of the Indian football team has come under intense scrutiny following India's controversial 2-1 defeat to Asian Champions Qatar. Back in March, Stimac had unequivocally stated that he would resign from his position if he failed to guide the Indian team to the unprecedented third round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers.

However, after the recent setback against Qatar, Stimac announced his intention to discuss his future with AIFF officials before making a final decision.

Now according to a recent report by TOI, the AIFF plans to initiate discussions with Stimac about a mutual parting of ways. However, such an agreement is unlikely to proceed without financial compensation.

The AIFF is planning to initiate discussions with Stimac next week, informing him that he is free to seek new employment. The committee established by AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey in April will also be involved in these negotiations to reach an amicable solution.

Stimac's current contract -- which runs until June 2026 and has a hefty paycheck of Rs 25 lakh per month -- continues to be a hindrance as the Croat is subject to a compensation of Rs 3 crore approximately as his severance pay. Despite his previous statements to an AIFF special committee, Stimac is now reluctant to leave without a settlement.

After the defeat to Qatar, Stimac reportedly told the players that he intends to remain as the head coach. The report further added that Stimac believes he should not bear the full responsibility for the team's performance. He feels that the AIFF failed to fulfil its promises and provide adequate support.

Within the AIFF and its technical committee, there is a consensus that India need a new coach. While appointing an Indian coach full-time has been ruled out, assistant coach Mahesh Gawli is considered a temporary replacement should Stimac depart close to upcoming tournaments, such as the tri-nation in September and Merdeka in October.
