Gundogan Seals Manchester City Return Following Barcelona Tenure

Ilkay Gundogan returns to Manchester City from Barcelona on a one-year contract. During his initial seven seasons at City, he won 14 honours, including the Champions League. Last season at Barcelona, he had 19 goal involvements and was top in creating chances in LaLiga.

Ilkay Gundogan has rejoined Manchester City from Barcelona, as confirmed by the Premier League champions on Friday. Gundogan, who played 304 matches for City between 2016 and 2023, has signed a one-year contract with Pep Guardiola's team. The 33-year-old midfielder won 14 trophies during his first spell at City, including their first Champions League title last year.Last season, Gundogan was instrumental for Barcelona, contributing to 19 goals (five goals and 14 assists) in all competitions. He also created the most chances in LaLiga with 97 and completed 2,116 of his 2,337 passes. Only Joules Kounde had better passing stats in the Barca squad.Gundogan expressed his joy about returning to Manchester City on the club's website: "My seven years at Manchester City were a time of pure contentment for me, both on and off the pitch. I grew as a person and a player, developed a special relationship with the City fans and enjoyed amazing success. It was an exceptional period in my life."During his initial tenure at City, Gundogan had his best season in 2020-21, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in 46 appearances across all competitions. Strengthening Guardiola's Squad

Gundogan is City's second signing of this transfer window after Savinho from Troyes. His experience will be valuable as Guardiola's side aims for a fifth consecutive Premier League title. Gundogan said: "To have the opportunity to return here means so much. Everyone knows the respect I have for Pep – he is the best manager in the world and working with him every day makes you a better player."Gundogan added: "You feel constantly challenged, which for any professional is exactly what you want. I cannot wait to work with him again."
