In what could be one of the most unexpected transfers this summer, Ilkay Gundogan is reportedly set to return to Manchester City just a year after leaving for Barcelona.
The German midfielder departed the Etihad last summer after a successful seven-year stint, during which he won multiple trophies, to join the Spanish giants. His time in Catalonia has been productive, with over 50 appearances, five goals, and 14 assists.

However, after only one season with Barcelona, Gundogan is on the verge of making a shocking return to Manchester City. The move has raised eyebrows across the football world.
Initial reports suggested that new Barcelona manager Hansi Flick had reservations about Gundogan's fit within his high-pressing system.
While Flick has maintained that the decision to part ways was purely tactical, financial issues at Barcelona likely played a significant role. The club has been struggling with severe financial constraints for several seasons, making it crucial to reduce their wage bill.
Gundogan's substantial salary, reportedly around €20 million per year, made him a prime candidate for departure. Barcelona's need to lower their wage expenditures to register new signing Dani Olmo prompted them to facilitate Gundogan's exit without seeking a transfer fee.
Gundogan is expected to sign a one-year contract with Manchester City, with an option to extend for another year. It is unlikely that he will receive the same lucrative package he had at Barcelona.
Notably, the 33-year-old has agreed to forgo the remaining two years of his Barcelona contract and the salary he would have been owed. Before his move to Barcelona, Gundogan was earning around £140,000 per week at City, and he could see a similar figure upon his return.
His willingness to sacrifice a substantial amount of money to rejoin Manchester City speaks volumes about his urge to be part of Pep Guardiola's side once again.
