Ahead of India's opening Test against Bangladesh, head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed Rishabh Pant's return to the playing XI after nearly two years of absence following a car accident. Gambhir heaped praise on Pant, highlighting his phenomenal performances both as a wicketkeeper and a destructive batter.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Chennai, Gambhir emphasized how Pant's batting often overshadows his impressive work behind the stumps. "Pant can open the game for us. As a keeper also, he has done phenomenally well. We all know how destructive Pant can be. It is good to have someone like him," Gambhir stated.

Pant, known for his game-changing abilities, will be crucial as India embarks on a long Test season. Gambhir also shed light on the selection dilemma involving young talents Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, both of whom have made impactful Test debuts earlier this year.
Jurel, who earned 'Player of the Match' honors during India's Test series against England, and Sarfaraz, who scored multiple half-centuries during his debut series, have impressed the team management with their performances. However, with Pant's return and KL Rahul back in the fold, Gambhir hinted that both youngsters might have to wait for their next opportunity.
"We don't drop anyone. We just pick the players who fit the XI. Jurel is a phenomenal player, but when Pant is coming in, sometimes people have to wait. Same with Sarfaraz. There will be opportunities, but they have to wait," Gambhir explained.
Sarfaraz, who scored 200 runs in five innings at an average of 50.00, and Jurel, who tallied 190 runs in four innings at an average of 53.67, have shown tremendous potential. However, the return of experienced players like Pant and Rahul has pushed them down the pecking order for now.
Gambhir reassured fans that the talented youngsters will get their opportunities as the Test season progresses, with player rotations likely due to the workload management.
