The India U23 team’s results in the past year have been mixed. They lost their AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers group stage matches last September against hosts UAE by a 0-3 margin and China by a 1-2 margin. However, they did reach the Asian Games quarterfinals.

In the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers last year, this Malaysia U23 team won two matches against Bangladesh by a 2-0 margin and the Philippines by a 4-0 margin and lost one against Thailand by a 0-1 margin. Their last game before they faced India was a 1-2 loss against the China U23 team.

In their last encounter three days ago, India lost the match by a 1-2 margin against Malaysia. Malaysia took a 2-goal lead within 49 minutes of the match. Shivaldo Singh only managed to get one goal back for India in 78th minute.
