India faced Afghanistan on the road and ended the match in a lacklustre 0-0 draw. This match was important for them to win, but the Indian football team's performance was unexpected lacking. In the end, they had to share the spoils with Afghanistan.
India coach Igor Stimac almost had the entire squad for the match until ace Sahal Abdul Samad sustained a hamstring injury during a training session before the match. The initial work on the injury confirmed he would not be able to play the match.

The coach had two options in his hands to field in Sahal’s place - Brandon Fernandes and Vikram Pratap Singh. Brandon recovered from an illness and rejoined his ISL club, FC Goa at the start of this month. He did start two matches for the Gaurs in the Indian Super League.
However, the coach chose Vikram Pratap Singh to start for the Blue Tigers against Afghanistan. Additionally, the coach started the player on the left wing which was not his natural position. He was seemingly uncomfortable in the position and it even took him time to get a sense of his duties.
There was no doubt that the 22-year-old tried his best. However, considering his performance for the Mumbai City this season, it wasn't his best day at the office for the Blue Tigers. He has registered seven goals and two assists in 18 ISL games this season.
With that, he has become the highest Indian goalscorer in the Indian Super League. Vikram is energetic and his pace can pose threats for the opposition's defenders. However, his performance looked to be diminished against Afghanistan.
He was taken off at the one hour mark and Brandon Fernandes came in his place. As per reports, Sahal’s recovery will take time and has been let go by the coach. Stimac might start Brandon instead of Vikram in the return leg.
