India vs Brazil Friendly: Ilgiz Tantashev To Lead Refereeing Team

India's high-profile friendlies against Brazil and Uruguay will be overseen by a set of referees from Uzbekistan, with three of the four officials having officiated at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has enlisted the Uzbek officials for the two international friendlies, with experienced referee Ilgiz Tantashev expected to take charge of India's clash against Brazil.

India vs Brazil

Tantashev is one of Asia's most experienced referees and has officiated at several major international competitions, including the 2024 Paris Olympics, the FIFA Club World Cup and two AFC Asian Cups. He has also refereed at three AFC U-23 Asian Cups, while regularly officiating in the AFC Champions League Elite since 2015 and the AFC Cup.

Ilgiz Tantashev to referee India vs Brazil

Tantashev is expected to be the referee for India's friendly against Brazil, with Rustam Lutfulin serving as the fourth official.

His appointment brings considerable experience to a match involving one of the world's most prominent football nations. Tantashev was also part of the officiating contingent at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, his World Cup campaign attracted attention after he handled France's group-stage match against Paraguay. Tantashev did not show a yellow card to any Paraguay player during the match, despite France later expressing concerns over the number of aggressive challenges their players faced.

The AIFF opted to request referees from Uzbekistan because of their recent experience at the World Cup.

"We asked Uzbekistan to send their referees because they officiated at the World Cup. They are experienced, good enough to handle teams of Brazil and Uruguay's stature," a senior AIFF official said.

Referees for India vs Uruguay

The officiating roles will be reversed for India's friendly against Uruguay three days later.

Lutfulin is expected to take charge of the Uruguay match, with Tantashev serving as the fourth official.

Andrey Tsapenko and Timur Gaynullin will serve as the assistant referees across the two fixtures. Both officials were also part of the refereeing contingent at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The appointments give the two friendlies an officiating team with significant experience at the highest level of international football.

Arunava Bhattacharya named match commissioner

India's Arunava Bhattacharya has been appointed as the match commissioner for the two fixtures.

Bhattacharya has overseen more than 50 international matches as an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) match commissioner since 2019. He has also served as a FIFA match commissioner since 2023.

With Brazil and Uruguay arriving in India for a pair of high-profile international fixtures, the appointments underline the AIFF's emphasis on experienced match officials for the games.
