India vs Hong Kong AFC Qualifiers: Ryan Williams Set To Debut For Blue Tigers In Kochi

By MyKhel Staff

Ryan Williams is set for a possible India debut on March 31. The 32-year-old winger, born in Perth, could feature against Hong Kong, China in Kochi. His FIFA clearance arrived in November 2025 after a change of association from Football Australia to the All India Football Federation.

The AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers Final Round match will be at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium. Williams missed India’s game against Bangladesh on November 18, 2025. His clearance from FIFA’s Players’ Status Chamber came too late for that squad in Dhaka.

Ryan Williams India Blue Debut Moment

He had trained with India and travelled to Dhaka on his first trip with an Indian passport. But he could not play at the National Stadium. Williams said he felt frustrated then. He also spoke of a silver lining and a chance to debut in blue.

He noted the meaning of the blue shirt, especially in Kerala. He said playing in front of home fans would be special. He added that the orange kit was also good. But he felt the blue carried extra weight in one of India’s football hubs.

Williams described the eligibility process as long and strict. It involved many documents and checks before India issued his passport. FIFA then approved his switch in November 2025. He said there was a big sense of relief when the decision arrived and everything felt settled.

Some people told him the move was not possible. Williams said he stayed stubborn and pushed on. He admitted it did not feel real until he held his passport. He now sees his arrival as part of a new step for Indian football.

Williams came through football systems in Australia and England. He played for Portsmouth, Fulham, Oxford United, Barnsley, Rotherham United and Perth Glory. In 2019, he represented Australia in a friendly against Korea Republic. He had also played for the Socceroos U23 and U20 teams.

He joined Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League in 2023. At that point he was another foreign signing. Now, after his change of association, he is effectively the first former foreign player from India’s league system to play for the Indian national team.

Williams’ Indian roots come through his mother, who is from Mumbai. His grandfather, Lincoln Grostate, played for Bombay in the Santosh Trophy. His twin brother, Aryn Williams, played for NEROCA FC in the I-League between 2017 and 2019. Ryan called his journey a full-circle moment.

He said his family felt very proud. He linked his career to his grandfather’s legacy. He spoke of returning to India and now joining the national team. He said the connection across generations made this phase feel even more meaningful for him.

Entering a new national squad brought nerves. Williams did not know how teammates would receive him. His two seasons at Bengaluru FC helped. He already knew many players. He said the group had been very welcoming and described everyone in the camp as humble and kind.

He is now in his second India camp. Williams said he feels more comfortable this time. He spoke of more talks, shared sessions and better understanding. He said the squad members are usually happy and smiling, and that this atmosphere adds to his sense of belonging.

Williams’ move gained heavy attention online. He had renounced his Australian passport and taken an Indian one. He said his Instagram followers had more than doubled. He called the response overwhelming but positive. He said he had not received a single bad message so far.

He offered advice to young players in India. He urged them to take the ball and try things. He said they should not fear mistakes or looking foolish. He added that such attempts are part of growth. He also had a message for players of Indian origin abroad.

Williams said his long-term aim is to encourage those players. He stressed that the move to India is possible, despite doubts from others. He said they can come, play, and make a difference. For now, his focus stays on March 31 and a debut in Kochi.
