With 30 months to go for the World Cup 2026 in North America, India begin their campaign through the Asian qualifiers as they travel to the Middle East to face Kuwait in Al-Ardiya.
This will be India's 30th attempt to qualify for the World Cup finals and seems to be their strongest one as the national side has improved under coach Igor Stimac. The match begins at 10:00 PM IST.
The World No. 102 have defeated Kuwait earlier this year in Bengaluru during the SAFF Championships semifinal when goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu starred in the penalty shootout. However, repeating the feat against the World No. 136 at their home that too at a 60,000-capacity Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium will require historic effort.
The matches of the AFC World Cup qualifiers also serve as the qualification rounds for the 2027 Asian Cup with the top two from four-nation Group A not just reaching the final round of World Cup qualification but also making the cut for the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia
Reading into Kuwait's ranking will also be a mistake as the side has been historically a strong team in the continent and have recently defeated superior-ranked Bahrain and Syria. Forward Shabaib Al-Khaldi is the dangerman with braces in each of the games.
