India are currently placed second on the points table with four points while being locked on points with Afghanistan, who are trailing behind on goal difference of -7. This means a victory against Kuwait tonight for India will virtaully seal their spot in the third round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers 2026, an unprecedented achievement for Indian football.
However, it will be a mistake to take Kuwait lightly irrespective of the fact that Blue Tigers defeated them 1-0 through a Manvir Singh goal in the first leg back in November to bring the hopes of third round alive. Kuwait are currently fourth and last in the group with three points but a win for them tonight will put them second behind Asian Champions Qatar, who are in a league of their own with four wins out of as many games and have sealed their third round berth as group winners.
For India, things are looking tricky as they missed the chance to seal the berth earlier by failing to beat Afghanistan away and then losing the return leg 2-1 in Guwahati. The results have put head coach Igor Stimac's job on the line and a negative result tonight may very well be his farwell from Indian football as well.
Looking at the head-to-head, this will be the seventh match between the two nations with each sides winning two matches each. Interestingly both of Indian wins came from their last two games, including a win on penalties during the SAFF Championships 2023 Final in Bengaluru.
