India vs Malaysia: Blue Tigers settle for 1-1 draw in Hyderabad, Go 12 Matches without a Win

By MyKhel Staff

India vs Malaysia: India's hopes for a long-awaited victory were dashed as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Malaysia in an international friendly at Hyderabad's GMC Balayogi Stadium. India's winless streak stretches to 12 matches.

Rahul Bheke's 38th-minute header helped India avoid defeat after falling behind early in the match. The match highlighted both the promise and pitfalls of a team still searching for form under coach Manolo Marquez with five players making a debut, including Irfan Yadwad, MS Jithin, Valpuia, Edmund Lalrindika and Vibin Mohanan.

India vs Malaysia Match Report

The game began with India holding early possession but failing to break through Malaysia's disciplined defence. Disaster struck in the 19th minute when goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu misjudged a long ball, allowing Sturmer Dos Reis to slot into an open net.

The visitors capitalised on India's shaky defence and nearly doubled their lead with a scissor-kick attempt by Safawi Bin Rasid in the second half.

India clawed their way back into the match in the 39th minute. Rahul Bheke rose above the Malaysian defence to meet Brandon Fernandes' precise corner, heading home the equaliser and igniting the home crowd. Despite the goal, India's attacking frontline, led by debutant Irfan Yadwad, struggled to find coherence, with the forward often isolated and unable to convert chances.

The second half brought renewed vigour from both teams. Malaysia threatened early, but India maintained control with greater possession and sharp defending. Naorem Roshan Singh and Anwar Ali were instrumental in thwarting Malaysia's counterattacks, while substitutes Edmund Lalrindika and Jithin MS injected energy into India's midfield.

The closing moments were dramatic, with Malaysia pressing hard. Fergus Tierney's header struck the post in injury time, and Safawi Bin squandered a golden opportunity to seal the win. Gurpreet Singh also found himself in a tense altercation with Malaysian defender Daniel Sang Ting, epitomising the fierce competition on the field.

India's tactical shift under Manolo Marquez was evident, with four players earning their international debuts. While the team showed glimpses of potential, the result extended their winless streak to 12 matches, raising questions about their ability to deliver in critical moments.

For Malaysia, the draw reflected their resilience and opportunistic play, though their inability to convert chances may have left them feeling they let victory slip away.

India's next challenge will require a sharper attack and fewer defensive lapses as they seek to end their year-long winless streak. Meanwhile, Malaysia will return home with valuable takeaways from a well-fought encounter.
