India vs Maldives: India delivered a commanding performance at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Maldives in a FIFA International Friendly.
The Blue Tigers took control early on and maintained their dominance throughout, with goals from Rahul Bheke, Liston Colaco, and captain Sunil Chhetri ensuring a well-earned win.

This victory marked India’s first international triumph in 15 months and the first under the leadership of Spanish head coach Manolo Márquez. With momentum now on their side, India will next face Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers on March 25 at the same venue.
The atmosphere at the stadium was electric, with fans eagerly anticipating the return of legendary striker Sunil Chhetri, who was back in the national squad after nearly 10 months. Playing in his 152nd international match, Chhetri wasted no time in making his presence felt.
Just seconds into the game, he created an early opportunity with a well-placed cross into the penalty area, but the chance was missed. In the 14th minute, another moment of brilliance saw his header from a free-kick travel across the goalmouth, yet none of his teammates could apply the finishing touch.
Despite controlling possession and applying constant pressure, India had to wait until the 34th minute to break the deadlock. A precise corner delivery from Brandon Fernandes found Rahul Bheke, who powered a header past the Maldives goalkeeper to put India ahead.
The visitors attempted to stay in the game, with their defence holding firm in the face of relentless Indian attacks. Maldives goalkeeper Hussain Shareef made a crucial save in the 25th minute to deny Liston Colaco’s long-range strike, but his resistance was broken in the second half.
India continued to press forward after the break, and their persistence paid off in the 66th minute. A well-taken corner by Naorem Mahesh Singh found Liston Colaco, who rose above the defence to head in his first international goal and double India’s lead.
The defining moment of the match came 10 minutes later when Chhetri showcased his class once again. A pinpoint cross from Colaco met the veteran striker, who expertly directed his header into the net, sealing the result in style.
With the match firmly in India’s control, head coach Márquez made substitutions to rest key players. In the 82nd minute, Chhetri was substituted for Irfan Yadwad, receiving a standing ovation from the home crowd. India comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure a much-needed win.
This victory provided a timely boost for India as they prepare for their crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier against Bangladesh. The Blue Tigers will aim to build on this performance and secure another positive result as they look to advance in the competition.
