India vs Panama: International Friendly Preview, Team News, Predicted Lineups

The Indian football team begin a challenging FIFA international window when they take on Panama in a friendly at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Friday.

This is India's first-ever senior international meeting with Panama and the first of three fixtures against teams that featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Brazil and Uruguay await in Kolkata next month.

The Blue Tigers are set for a huge challenge as they face significantly superior opponents in the next 12 days or so. India head coach Khalid Jamil will be hoping for a fight from his boys.

"I think this is a good opportunity to play against a team who has just come from the World Cup. They played really good in the World Cup. They have good players and it is going to be a very good test for us," Jamil said at the pre-match press conference on Thursday.

India head coach Khalid Jamil has named a 26-member squad for the September-October window. The notable absentees include Sandesh Jhingan, Lallianzuala Chhangte and Liston Colaco. Experienced midfielder Anirudh Thapa has returned to the national setup after an extended absence, while Ryan Williams is available after recovering from injury.

Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is expected to start, with Jamil likely to retain a four-man defensive structure. India will need to remain compact without the ball and look to exploit Panama on quick transitions.

Panama coach Thomas Christiansen has selected a 27-player squad, with 14 members of the squad having featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The squad also includes several new faces, including Marcos De León, Jair Modelo, Joseph Jones, Josué Vergara, Daivis Murillo and Mijahir Jiménez.

What to Expect

The gulf in FIFA rankings makes this a demanding assignment for India. Panama are ranked 44th, while India are 138th. Panama also arrive with the experience of playing at the 2026 World Cup.

For Jamil, however, the fixture is an opportunity to test his players against significantly stronger opposition. Ryan Williams could be particularly important in attack, with his pace, movement and ability to carry the ball offering India an outlet during counter-attacks.
