Indian Football: In a significant shift that could reshape the future of Indian football, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has begun the formal process of bringing Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) into the national team setup.

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey confirmed the development on Friday, signaling a potential end to a long-standing restriction that has prevented talented players with Indian heritage from representing the country.

The move comes on the heels of mounting public frustration, particularly after India's dismal performances in recent international fixtures. A 0-1 defeat to Hong Kong and the desperate plea from head coach Manolo Marquez to retired legend Sunil Chhetri to return for the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers have laid bare the lack of depth in India's football talent pool.

Since 2008, a ruling from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has barred players with OCI or PIO (Person of Indian Origin) status from representing India unless they hold a valid Indian passport. This has long been a topic of debate, with many blaming the policy for stunting India's progress in global sports like football and tennis.

At a press conference in New Delhi, Chaubey announced that change is now on the horizon. "Additionally, it is worth noting that many countries that lie below India in the FIFA rankings have adopted the policy of allowing naturalized players," he pointed out.

He further revealed that efforts are already underway to integrate such talent into the national framework. "The AIFF has also proactively initiated communication with various ministries within the Indian government regarding OCI players, with encouraging responses," Chaubey said.

So far, the Federation has identified 33 players who meet the eligibility criteria under OCI status. "The AIFF is in communication with 33 players who fall into the category of OCI. Some of them have received their OCI cards, and others are in the process of attaining the same, with the assistance of the AIFF," Chaubey added.

He emphasized that this initiative is being carried out in full compliance with domestic regulations and FIFA's eligibility guidelines. "We are committed to aligning with the laws of the land and the framework of the FIFA statutes for the inclusion of OCI players in India," he concluded.
