Indian Super League 2026 Set for Kick-Off as Indian Football Eyes Return to Normalcy
The Indian Super League (ISL) is likely to return to its traditional calendar, with the 2026-27 season tentatively scheduled to begin on September 4.
The proposed start date emerged following a meeting between ISL clubs, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, where stakeholders discussed the immediate future of Indian football, including the commercial structure of the league and player development pathways.

The Durand Cup is also expected to return before the start of the ISL season, with the tournament tentatively pencilled in for July 25.
The developments mark a significant improvement from the situation Indian football found itself in a year ago. At this stage in 2025, uncertainty surrounding the league's long-term commercial future had delayed the season by several months, eventually resulting in a shortened campaign played between February and May.
Indian Super League Clubs to discuss commercial roadmap with Genius Sports
One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the decision for ISL clubs to engage with Genius Sports regarding the league's commercial future.
Representatives from all ISL clubs attended the meeting except Jamshedpur FC, while newly promoted Diamond Harbour FC was also present as preparations continue for the upcoming campaign.
Diamond Harbour earned promotion after winning the Indian Football League (IFL) and is currently expected to complete a 14-team ISL lineup. However, the club remains under scrutiny following allegations of irregularities, meaning the competition could proceed with 13 teams should sanctions be imposed.
OCI and PIO player pathway discussed
Another major topic of discussion centred around Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) players.
According to sources, the issue was discussed extensively as the AIFF continues exploring ways to expand India's player pool.
AIFF officials were recently in London during the Unity Cup, where they reportedly held discussions with player agencies and footballers of Indian origin regarding opportunities in Indian football.
The idea being considered is for clubs to integrate one or two eligible players of Indian origin into their squads, helping build a wider talent pool that could eventually become available for the national team setup.
Ryan Williams has emerged as a model for the proposed pathway. The former Australia U-23 international spent two seasons with Bengaluru FC before obtaining an Indian passport and becoming eligible to represent India.
Focus on developing Indian forwards and coaches
The meeting also addressed concerns surrounding the development of Indian strikers and coaching talent.
India's struggles in front of goal have become increasingly apparent, with the national team scoring only three open-play goals over the last 15 months. The most recent goal by an out-and-out forward came from Ryan Williams against Hong Kong earlier this year.
As a result, stakeholders discussed ways to encourage clubs to invest more heavily in producing Indian attacking talent while also creating stronger pathways for domestic coaches.
With a likely September start date, the return of the Durand Cup and greater clarity surrounding the league's commercial future, Indian football appears to be entering the 2026-27 season on considerably firmer footing than it did twelve months ago.
